THREE of Wellington Wildcats’ youth teams were in action last weekend, including the under 12s girls who saw off Berrow 3-0 to reach a cup semi-final.
Welly’s positive start was rewarded midway through the first half when Emilia S opened the scoring with a well-taken finish.
Wildcats continued to play with confidence and intensity, dominating large spells of the match. Their second goal soon followed when Hetty H combined neatly with Sara M, with Sara finishing from close-range to double the lead.
The Wildcats’ first-half display was one of their most complete performances of the season, and they added a third goal just before half-time when a rebound fell kindly to Sara M, who calmly finished to claim her second of the game and give Wildcats a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break.
Berrow returned in the second half determined to respond and created a few opportunities of their own. However, the Wildcats defence remained organised and resilient, limiting chances and maintaining control of the game to secure a place in the semi-final. POTM was jointly awarded to Emilia S and Lola R.
The Wildcats’ under 14s travelled to Midsomer Norton for a sunny lunchtime kick-off. Despite the setback of an early goal, Wildcats gradually settled and began to grow into the match, with Lily F making a strong impact in midfield. Wildcats equalised when Flo N chased down a long ball finishing calmly to make it 1-1. However, the hosts quickly restored their lead to go 2-1 ahead. Wildcats responded again when Lily F powered through midfield before finishing well for 2-2.
The match then burst into life with a flurry of goals. Norton moved ahead again, but Wildcats showed great character. London A produced a moment of magic, scoring from 30 yards to tighten the gap, and soon after, player-of-the-match Ruby A ran through the defence scoring confidently to give Wildcats the lead. Unfortunately, the advantage did not last long as Division One title-chasing Norton equalised before half-time and then scored twice more after the break.
The Wildcats Under 16s produced an outstanding performance to defeat Division One side Isle of Wedmore 5–2 away from home and secure a place in the Somerset Girls League Plate Final.
Wildcats started strongly, pressing high and moving the ball well. Mackayla H was a constant threat out wide while captain Lola H and Erin C battled hard in midfield. Wildcats took control in the first half thanks to two excellent goals from leading scorer Emilia S, giving the visitors a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time.
Defensively, Immy M, Darcey B, Julia R and Florence S were excellent, keeping Wedmore’s chances to a minimum while protecting the goal.
Wedmore pulled a goal back early in the second half, but Wildcats responded immediately as Emilia S completed her hat-trick to restore the two-goal lead before POTM, Orlaith C added another with a superb strike to make it 4-1.
The hosts scored from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 4–2, but Wildcats stayed composed as Jasmine S produced two crucial saves, while Jess B delivered an excellent second-half performance in midfield.
Emilia S completed a remarkable four-goal performance late in the game to seal a memorable victory and send Wildcats into the Plate final, where they will face Shepton Mallet.
