FORMER Wellington schoolboy Tom Nichols faces another big football night when he plays for Exeter City in a third qualifying round FA Cup replay at Liverpool tonight (Sept 20).

The ex-Court Fields student scored one of the goals in the surprise 2-2 home draw for underdogs City against Liverpool last Friday week.

Nichols, who scored again in City’s 3-1 win at Leyton Orient on Saturday, was named Man of the Match by football pundit Danny Murphy who was commentating for BBC.

Exeter were 2-1 up in the second half and threatening to pull off a major shock when Liverpool grabbed an equaliser in the 73rd minute.

BT Sport will be covering the replay and interest in the tie has been growing because Liverpool are likely to field another young side.

Their boss Jurgen Klopp is a highly respected manager in the football world but is under pressure because Liverpool have a number of players unavailable.

Young Nichols, 22, will have another chance to put himself in the shop window.

He has been a professional at City for five years and he should now be thinking of moving to a bigger club.

His father Pete, who ran the King’s Arms in Wellington and still lives in the town at Springfield, will be there to soak up the atmosphere, along with Tom’s mother Chris who now lives in Ruishton.

The pair have been inundated with calls from the media who sense Exeter could pull off a shock result.

Exeter made £700,000 after forcing a replay against Manchester United in the same competition ten years ago – money which went to pay off the club’s debts.

Whatever the result, Exeter stand to profit by a similar amount.
