GEORGE Hodgson will captain Wellington 1st XV in Regional Two South West this coming season, writes Barry Knott.
Hodgson, whose brother Will is also a regular member of Wellington’s first team, was chosen at a well-attended players meeting held at the club.He takes over from Danny Lee, who missed half of last season through injury and has had to retire.
In a club statement, the club says: “Hodgson (G) brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as vice captain over the last few seasons.
“Louie Justice will captain the 2nd XV. Louie, a fine prospect and capable back row forward, will look to galvanise a young 2nd XV, leading from the front and pushing himself towards a regular lst XV spot in the future.
“The club wishes to thank outgoing captains Danny Lee and Andrew Bellamy (2nd XV) for their huge contributions to the success of the Red and Blacks. Both will be very hard acts to follow.
“Also, at the meeting, it was agreed that the indomitable Josh Hancock would continue in the role of Players Rep.
“Training under new head coach Bradley Field continues every Tuesday and Thursday at 7p.m. All past, present and new players are welcome.”
Wellington 1st XV finished a disappointing ninth in Regional Two South West during their 150th anniversary season, with chairman Hodgson admitting it had been ‘difficult’ for the club’s two sides.
He said in his programme notes towards the end of the season: “There’s no doubt we’ve had a difficult 150th season on the pitch with mixed availability, injuries and other factors playing a part.
“This was the main factor in Wellington not being able to field a settled first team. Even so they still managed to gain a splendid 24-22 win over highflyers Crediton in their last home match of the season.
