WELLINGTON Rugby Club are considering playing inter-club matches in a bid to ‘keep the boys interested.

Coach Allyn Chetland said: “We want to test the water. We are considering playing a game against a Vets’ side within the club and the Under 18s.

“If these matches are successful we will look to play other clubs. With no competitive rugby in sight until at least January we have to look at various ways of keeping the players motivated.

“We would be looking to play matches on Saturdays and in the week.”

Wellington, who were declared winners of Western Counties West last season, have not played a competitive game since they beat Swindon away in the quarter-finals of the National Cup in mid-March.

Another victory in this competition would have meant an appearance in the final at Twickenham.

Their young side had also been looking forward to playing in South West One (W) this season. Wellington have never played at such a high level.

With most of the players having come up through the youth ranks, it would have been interesting to see how they would have fared against the likes of Bridgwater and Albion, North Petherton, Lydney, Keynsham and Crediton.

Such games would have attracted big crowds to the Athletic Ground. Unfortunately, the season, when it does start, is going to look very different to what was intended.

Meanwhile, Wellington and Wiveliscombe have not ruled out playing their annual Boxing Day clash at the Athletic Ground.

“We haven’t ruled out anything,” said Chetland. “We will have to have a chat with Wivey and see how we will be affected by Covid-19 restrictions.

“At the moment we can play some kind of game but things change all the time.”
