WELLINGTON Colts gained a splendid 24-19 away win over their Taunton countarparts in the Somerset League.
Wellington had a full squad of 23 for the first time this season with Ashton Adams and Ollie Owen making their first starts against fourth-placed Taunton.
Wellington tore into the bigger Taunton side right from the kick off and took the lead with a try by Archie Austin in the 12th minute.
Wellington could have been two or three tries up by then but Taunton defended well to keep it to one score. Taunton then hit back to take a 7-5 lead.
In the wet muddy conditions Brock Vallance then hacked the ball on and found Ollie Owen racing up alongside him to out pace the defence and score the try. Brock converted to make it 12-7 at half time.
After the break Brock hit a fantastic line off a perfect pass form Thomas Gendall and raced clear. When the full back tackled him he managed to find Bailey Lee up in support who stepped out of a tackle to score under the posts. This was converted by Brock who later failed to convert Wellington’s last try when great hands put Charlie Taylor in the corner.
Try bonus point secured, Wellington seemed to either step off the gas or suffer a bit of fatigue as Taunton came back into the game. They scored two good tries and with one converted. This made it 24-19 to Wellington.
Wellington then pulled themselves together and played a solid last five minutes to secure the win. This was by far the best performance of the season by Wellington. Even though it was wet and muddy Wellington generally played sensible rugby, rarely knocking on and putting good pressure on Taunton when they had the ball. Player of the week was Harrison Hooper who is sponsored by Helens Animal Services.
