MATT Colman steps down as treasurer of Wellington Rugby Club at its annual meeting next month after being in the post for 16 years.

The popular Colman explained yesterday: “When I started as treasurer the club was not what it is today. It is now a fully fledged business and takes up a lot of time.

“We have some splendid facilities for a club of our size – we built a new stand not so long ago – and that in itself means more running costs. There are so many things going on down at the club now.

“I am now looking forward to a break for a couple of years although I will remain on the committee, but not as an officer.

“I also think it is time for a change and for some new blood. Our financial year ended in April 30 and I think I am leaving the club in a healthy financial position.

“I’m looking to recharge my batteries but I don’t rule out holding another senior position with the club one day.”

Colman, now 47 and a financial consultant for a Bristol-based company, made 510 first team appearances for Wellington and captained the side between 1992 an 1996 when they won 99 matches.

“We had a very good side then and I’m proud of that record,” he added. “We also reached the semi-finals of the Somerset Cup which was a splendid achievement for a club of our size.”

Although yet to be confirmed, the club’s annual meeting is likely to be held on Friday, July 29, when secretary Nick Robins will also be relinquishing his post
