WELLINGTON’S new rugby coach Laurence Ovens insists he will not be putting on his boots – not just yet, anyway.

The former Bath and Newcastle prop forward said yesterday: “I have been asked whether I intend to play quite a few times recently.

“And I’ve given everyone the same answer.

“I’m 100 per cent focused on coaching and getting the team playing right. There are a number of things we need to sort out.”

Wellington lost 23-10 at home to Cullompton in Western Counties West on Saturday and Ovens commented: “We were the victims of our own making.

“We gave away 20-odd penalties – that’s unacceptable. I’m not criticising the referee – he was good. We also need to improve our discipline and to improve generally.”

Wellington play away to Burnham on Sea on Saturday and the two sides have similar records - one win and two defeats.

Wellington 2nd XV, who lost 43-0 away to Old Sulians in Somerset One on Saturday, are home to Clevedon 2nd XV (3.00).

Wiveliscombe, who suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down 20-6 away to a useful Weston outfit in Somerset Premier, will be looking to bounce back when they play at home to Winscombe.

It is another tough game for Wivvy because Winscombe are the early leaders of the division, having won all three of their games and taken a maximum 15 points.

Wiveliscombe 2nd XV are away to their Winscombe counterparts in Somerset Two South.
