WELLINGTON go into Saturday’s rugby opener at home to Chard in Western Counties West with confidence following an impressive display in a friendly at North Petherton (3.00).

Although Wellington eventually lost 17-7 at Petherton they led for much of the game and the home side’s team manager Pete Woolacott was very complimentary about the visitors.

"They looked a very good side indeed," said Woolacott. "It was a very good workout for both sides and only our fitness at the end saw us through."

Cam Venn, at No 8, and inside centre Rob Hooper, who has rejoined the club after a spell in Australia, looked good for Wellington along with outside half Will Brewer who is back playing again after being sidelined for two years through injury.

"There is plenty of competition for places so selection will not be easy," said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland. "This time last year Petherton were playing two levels above us.

"We go into the game against Chard with confidence, but we won’t be over-confident. Chard are a good side and it’s not so long ago they were playing National League rugby. There have been some changes at the South Somerset club over the summer and it will be interesting to see how this transfers onto the field of play."

In winning the Cornwall and Devon League title last season Wellington did not lose a game at the Athletic Ground.

But everyone knows at the club that this season is going to be far different with few easy games, if any at all.

Wiveliscombe will also be in action on Saturday when they play at home to Bristol Barbarians who won Somerset One last season.

Wivey will be without five would-be regulars because of holidays, work and cricket commitments but will still be able to field a strong side.

They will have some new faces in the squad including second row Rory Stone and centre Josh Cooper, both from Taunton, and centre Luke Brown (Wellington).

Wellington and Wiveliscombe 2nds start their league matches the following Saturday.
