WELLINGTON Rugby Club held an inaugural touch rugby tournament last Saturday, in accordance with the RFU’s Ready4Rugby, with the Chiefs Trophy up for grabs, writes Allyn Chetland.

The early morning weather was not promising but that cleared up in time for a noon start. Format of the game was ten-a-side with rolling subs on nearly a full size pitch, the games lasting 15 minutes. The tournament finished at 2.30pm, just in time for International Super Saturday games.

The senior side of the club supplied two teams, with the U18s also fielding two sides, and just over 50 players taking part, all adhering to social distancing measures.

Some excellent, fast-flowing games ensued with the U18s looking comfortable and competitive, holding their own against the senior players, but experience told and the senior squad, captained by Andrew Bellamy, eventually ran out winners.

It was an enjoyable time for all involved, and special thanks go to Scott Cordy (head coach of the U18s) who refereed all the games, Trish and Marc Acton plus Bill Sherwin, the club’s director of rugby.

Many thanks also go to all those involved in organising the clubhouse afterwards, so everyone enjoyed the internationals in a safe envi

ronment in accordance with social distancing measures – not an easy task. Saturday was a great success for the club with more tournaments planned which will hopefully include girls and veterans sides when lockdown ends.
