WELLINGTON and Wiveliscombe go into this weekend’s round of rugby matches heading their divisions, writes Barry Knott.

Wellington, who play away to bottom side Wessex in the Cornwall and Devon League on Saturday, have a one-point lead at the top with Penryn and Saltash breathing down their necks.

They have six matches left and coach Allyn Chetland said: “Plymstock Oaks gave us a hard game last weekend and they’re some way down the table.

“We have to stay focused on the job ahead and take each game as it comes.

“Wessex may be struggling at the bottom but they are fighting for survival. There are no easy away games.”

With second row Regan Walker fit again, Wellington expect to field a strong squad for Saturday’s game although brother Martin Walker is sidelined following his recent sending off.

There is also a doubt over Danny Lee who went off against Plymstock over the weekend with a dead leg.

After Saturday’s game Wellington, unbeaten in their last 17 games, have matches against Pirates Amateurs (away, 11th), Bude (home, 5th), Hayle (home, 12th), Honiton (home, 4th), and Torrington (home, 13th).

Wiveliscombe coach Peter Stone believes his side will have to win all four of their remaining games if they are going to win Somerset Premier, starting with a home game against 12th placed Stothert and Pitt on Saturday.

“It’s very tight at the top with possibly four teams in with a real chance,” he said. “I thought our performance against Avon (won 10-8) was our best of the season.

“We had three injuries during the game and the boys who came off the bench did splendidly. It was a cracking game of rugby.”

After Saturday, Wiveliscombe have fixtures against Weston (home, 5th), Nailsea & Backwell (away, 7th) and St Bernadettes (home, 9th).
