WELLINGTON’S rugby boys will be looking to step up the pressure at the top of Western Counties West when they play at home to Penryn on Saturday (3.00).
Having won impressively 38-12 at Honiton over the weekend, Wellington are looking very much as though they will be in the mix at the end of the season.
Wellington coach Allyn Chetland described Wellington’s first half display at Honiton as “the best of the season and for a long time.”
He said: “Honiton are on a high at the moment after winning a national trophy at Twickenham last season. They have always been a difficult side to beat at home as we found out two seasons ago.
“The lads were brilliant in attack and defence in the first half. Perhaps not in the second half but even so we still looked the far better side. We certainly put them to the sword.”
Second-placed Wellington trail 100 per cent leaders St Austell by four points, both sides having played five matches.
Wellington’s opponents on Saturday Penryn were promoted along with Honiton at the end of last season.
Wellington expect to be at near full-strength with only prop Ryan Marke, who has been struggling with a shoulder injury, unavailable.
Wiveliscombe’s 10-7 defeat at Cullompton over the weekend leaves them bottom of Western Counties West.
And the club’s correspondent Roger Bellamy believes they will have to improve if they are to retain their status in the division.
They will be hoping for a better display when they play at home to Teignmouth this coming Saturday (3.00).
“I did not think we got the rub of the green at Cullompton,” said Wivey coach Peter Stone. “We did not have the strength in depth on the bench to really change it around in the last 15 minutes.”
Former captain John Ker, who has been suffering from concussion, could be back in contention for Saturday.
Teignmouth are fifth in the table, having won three of their five matches. They also put up a spirited fight away to St Austell before losing 35-28 on Saturday.
Wellington 2nd XV and Wiveliscombe 2nd XV have no match.
