WELLINGTON will be playing Western Counties rugby next season after clinching the title in the Cornwall and Devon League with a stylish 75-3 home win over relegated Torrington on Saturday, writes Barry Knott.
Wellington also extended their winning run to 24 games, having not lost a match for seven months.
With Saltash losing 40-20 at Bude, Wellington finished nine points clear of their Cornish rivals who were the only side in a position to deny them of the championship.
It was all over as a contest by half time at the Athletic Ground with Wellington piling up the points to lead 51-3. They scored nine tries, three of them coming from Tyler Hart, the others from Joe Dyke, Micky Norman, skipper Paddy Jarman, George Hodgson, Nev Pitman, Liam Phillips, with Alex Davey (2) and Norman kicking conversions. Torrington’s only reply was a penalty.
In the second half Ben Gamblin (2), Hodgson and Davey added tries for Wellington with Josh Hancock landing two conversions.
“It was a thoroughly professional display and I’m pleased for the players, the supporters and the club,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland. “I thought we outplayed them in all departments. We had to take each game as it came. The side we put out was as near to the best as we possibly could.”
Wellington were looking to add more silverware to their cabinet last night when they played Winscombe in the final of the Somerset Vase at North Petherton.
