WELLINGTON will be chasing only their third rugby win of the season when they play at home to Exeter University in Western Counties West on Saturday, writes Barry Knott.

With no match over the weekend, Wellington have had a chance to look back on their opening six matches.

“The break has given us the chance to freshen the lads up,” said Wellington coach Laurence Ovens yesterday. “We don’t know much about the University but we are looking forward to the game.

“Obviously you are not quite sure what sort of side we will be facing. They play twice a week.

“We have a couple of players with knocks particularly hooker Joe Dyke who has a knee issue. But Injuries are part and parcel of the game. You just have to accept it.”

A fortnight ago Wellington put up a spirited fight before losing 36-22 away to 100 per cent leaders Truro while the students suffered a 35-20 defeat against useful Devonport Services, now second in the table. Wellington are currently lying 11th but their young side are capable of beating the likes of Exeter University.

The only league match played over the weekend ended with Cullompton winning 16-15 at Torquay which moves them up into fourth in the table.

Wellington 2nd XV have a tough away match against Somerset One leaders Bristol Barbarians.

Wiveliscombe, who piled up more than 60 points in their last match a fortnight ago against Bristol Harlequins in Somerset Premier, are away to Crewkerne who are bottom. Wivey are fourth and their only two defeats this season have come against the division’s top two sides.

Wiveliscombe 2nd XV entertain Somerton who are fifth in Somerset Two South.
