WELLINGTON are still without a rugby victory in Regional Two South West this season after losing 43-22 away to fellow strugglers Cullompton in their latest match.

Both sides went into the fixture having suffered four losses in their opening four games.

The Devon side never looked back after taking the lead with an unconverted try after only five minutes. Cullompton scored another try, this time converted, to go 12-0 up after 20 minutes before Wellington hit back in the 22nd minute with a try by skipper George Hodgson which was converted by Charlie Snow.

However, Cullompton quickly bounced back to score converted tries in the 25th and 28th minutes to lead 26-7 after 28 minutes - which remained the score at the interval.

Trailing by 19 points at half time, Wellington soon found themselves 31-7 down as the home side snapped up an unconverted try in the 50th minute.

It was at this stage that Wellington finally clicked into gear and lifted their spirits by scoring two tries - both unconverted - through Evan Greening and Jason Rowland to make it 31-17 with 25 minutes still to be played. However, Cullompton responded quickly with a try, which was not converted, to lead 36-17.

Wellington refused to throw in the towel and the skipper’s brother Will Hodgson went over for a try to earn the visitors their first point of the season.

The lead was now down to 14 points and there was still time for Wellington to snatch what would have been a fine victory but Cullompton had other ideas and were in no mood to let this game get away from them.

And to avoid such a situation, Cullompton made sure of their first win with a converted try in the 75th minute in what was an entertaining match, even though Wellington are still in search of that elusive first victory.
