WELLINGTON Rugby Club are looking to improve facilities at the Athletic Ground, particularly on their new pitch at Beech Grove.

“The big problem at Beech Grove is drainage,” said club coach Allyn Chetland. “The pitch drains badly and there are, with increasing frequency, times when you cannot play on it.

“We have had a project to deal with this for some time but we’ve not been able to make much progress because of Covid-19.

“Drainage is the main problem. Beech Grove is a lovely pitch to play on but not when it is soaking wet. As a club we’re always looking to go forward and improve the facilities we have to offer our members and the wider community.

“For years the Athletic Ground has been over-used, which comes at a long-term cost to the health of the pitch. The acquisition of the Beech Grove field gave us the opportunity to plan long term to increase the playing capacity and thereby allow a more forgiving method of management of the playing capacity.”
