WELLINGTON Rugby Club ended their season with a 46-24 win over Barcelona University in Spain.

Wellington, who used 20 players in the match, led 18-12 after a close first half but pulled clear to win convincingly with George Hodgson leading the spree with two tries.

“It was a brilliant trip,” said secretary Ashley Colman afterwards. "We had a full day of sight-seeing around Barcelona. ”It was certainly a very enjoyable end to a hectic season.”

Wellington’s head coach Graham Dawe, an organic beef farmer in Devon, said: “We could not have ended the season in a better way. It has been a big season for the club - both on and off the field.”

Looking back on the season, Dawe added: “It has been a tough winter with a number of injuries and players being unavailable.

“Three of our key players - Danny Lee (skipper), George Hodgson (vice-captain) and full back Alex Davey - were only available for half the season. But it was great to see George back in action towards the end.

“The important thing was that we managed to stay up in Regional Two South West despite injuries to our top players. And even so we still managed to beat Crediton towards the end who are one of the best sides in the league and finished runners-up.

“It showed that when we could field a near-strength side we were a match for any team in the division."

Meanwhile, Wellington lst XV finished ninth in Regional Two South West, winning seven of their 22 matches and losing 15.

Wellington 2nd XV, who bore the brunt of the club’s injuries, finished a very creditable seventh in Counties Three South West, winning 11 and losing 11 games.

Wellington Vixens enjoyed a good season in their first winter of league rugby, showing an improvement throughout and beating Sherborne Ladies 57-17 in their final match.
