WELLINGTON will finish bottom of Western Counties West following their 28-14 defeat at St Austell over the weekend.

It means they will be relegated and will be playing in Somerset Premier next season, writes Barry Knott.

Held up in heavy traffic, Wellington arrived late at St Austell and found themselves 28-0 down quickly into the first half.

“We were still on the bus,” said Allyn Chetland who has been acting coach since November. I think this game and result sums up our season. We’ve not been able to field a settled side all season and yet we still played well at times at St Austell, especially in the second half when we could have scored two or three more tries.

“We also felt that two of St Austell’s tries should have been disallowed. I was proud of the lads apart from the opening 20 minutes.”

Wellington have no match over the Easter and have just one more game – away to fellow strugglers Crediton on Saturday week.

Crediton have not had a very good season and are likely to finish third from bottom and so avoid relegation. However, they were hammered 52-10 at St Ives over the weekend.

Wiveliscombe, who romped to a 54-14 away win over St Bernadettes in Somerset Premier on Saturday, are also without a fixture this weekend.

They are lying third in the table, one point behind second placed Oldfield Old Boys. The sides have one more game – Wiveliscombe are home to tenth-placed Stothert & Pitt and Oldfield play away to eighth-placed Nailsea & Backwell. It is going to be close. . .

Wellington and Wivey’s second teams also have a free weekend.

Wellington are likely to make an announcement shortly about the coaching set-up for next season.
