MOWERS are through to the quarter-finals of Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League’s Ken Bright Cup after knocking out big rivals Reservists in a thrilling first-round match at the Conservative Club.
They have now been drawn against Relyon who were convincing winners against Foresters.
Quarter-final draw (Nov 28 & 29, dates & venues TBC): Hot Shots v Bell Green, Queens Legs v Home Guard IV, Mowers v Relyon, King Pins v Nynehead Club.
First round scores - Rebels 6 (336), Hot Shots 8 (346): Both sides won three hands but it was Hot Shots who collected the two additional points. Chris Plant top scored for Rebels with 47 while Alex Govier hit 52 for the winners.
OBA 4 (374), Bell Green 10 (392): Bell Green moved into the next round with a solid display on the upstairs alley at the Conservative Club with Simon Rudd knocking a stunning 72 for the Bee Gees. OBA’s top scorer was Rob Billet with a splendid 62.
Odd & Ends 4 (342), Queens Legs 10 (375): Queens Legs saw off Odds and Ends on the downstairs alley at the Conservative Club with Adam Nicholls starring with a fine 63, while Theo Ling scored 49 for Odds & Ends.
Oaks 4 (362), Home Guard IV 10 (368): Home Guard IV booked their place in the next round at the Nynehead Club, winning four hands and taking the bonus points. Mike Shire hit 58 for Oaks while Dan Peters was top of the alley with 60.
Reservists 5 (377), Mowers 9 (378): Vince Milton hit 60 as Mowers picked up three hands and the bonus points in a great game between two of the league’s most successful sides. Skipper Darren Sparks led the way for Reservists with 59. Having beaten one of the top teams, Mowers will fancy their chances of going all the way in the competition.
Relyon 12 (381), Foresters 2 (329): Relyon showed their class with a strong win over Foresters at the Cottage, winning five hands and taking the bonus points. Jason Hayes was the star of the match with a great 66 for the Bedders, while both Andy Pitman and Greg Browne hit 50s for Foresters on the tricky alley.
Cottage Pies 4 (352), King Pins 10 (377): King Pins marched into the quarter-finals with a strong win against one of the early favourites Cottage Pies at the Blue Ball. Jon Goldsworthy hit an exceptional 57 for the Pies, but the Friday night side only managed to win two hands. For King Pins it was John Norman and Ryan Marke leading the way with 52s to help their side to four hands and the bonus points.
Report Centre A 0 (351), Nynehead Club 14 (411): Nynehead Club swept into the next round with a comprehensive clean sweep victory over Report Centre A on the upstairs alley at the Conservative Club. Pat Bright knocked 53 for RCA but Rob Couzens was the player of the match with a hand of 63 sealing a big win for the Thursday night side.
