ODDS and Ends secured victory in the wooden spoon play-off final at Wellington Football Club, defeating Report Centre A by 46 pins to ensure their opponents finished bottom of the Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League standings.
Skittling first, Odds and Ends made an excellent start and immediately put pressure on Report Centre A, opening with a strong first-hand total of 74. From there, they controlled the match throughout, consistently outscoring their opponents in every hand and never allowing the gap to close significantly.
Dan Smith led the way superbly with the top score of the match, an impressive 56, while James Jones provided excellent support with 55. Theo Ling also chipped in with a valuable 52 as Odds and Ends tightened their grip on the match,
For Report Centre A, Alan Baker’s 44 was the highlight on a difficult night, while John Cottrell, Pat Blight and Will Blight all added steady 41s. However, they Friday night side struggled to produce the big individual score needed to put Odds and Ends under pressure, and the deficit steadily grew as the game progressed.
By the closing stages, Odds and Ends had effectively put the result beyond doubt, eventually finishing comfortable winners at 364–318. The league thanks Lucas for sticking up, the Football Club, and the two sides who played the game in good spirits.
Meanwhile, the league will bring the curtain down on another memorable season on Friday, May 29, when it holds its annual presentation evening at Wellington Football Club.
Entertainment on the night will include the ever-popular triples competition for the Graham Jennings Shield, with £100 prrizemoney up for grabs for the winning team, ensuring there will still be plenty of competitive action to round off the season in style.
