WELLINGTON Ex-Services Skittles League have paid tribute to a “much loved figure” in their sport who recently passed away.

The tribute was in service of Neil Winter, who was a part of the local skittles scene for many years, and was described as having “an almost encyclopaedic knowledge” of everything relating to skittles in Wellington.

Marc Bright, on behalf of the Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League, said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Neil Winter, a long-standing and much-loved figure within the Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League.

“Neil was a dedicated player who proudly represented several teams over the years, including Reservists, OBA, Holywell Lake, and Oaks. More than just a player, Neil was a genuine fan of skittles.

“In the days before league websites and online updates, Neil was the man in the know. If you wanted the latest results or to catch up on how the season was shaping up, Neil was your go-to source.

“He had an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of the teams, the players, and the stories that made the league so special. He was a real champion of the league and what it represents.

“Many of us will remember Neil holding court at Rockwell Green Institute, swapping stories, sharing memories, and always showing a deep respect for the history of our league.

“His contribution to our game should not only to be measured in silverware (although he did win a fair bit of that!), but in the memories that those of us lucky enough to know him will cherish.

“He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of playing alongside him and knowing him. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, and former teammates at this time.”
