WELLINGTON have re-signed centre back Tom Stone in time to play in tomorrow’s FA Vase first qualifying round clash against South West Peninsula League side Okehampton at Tiverton (3p.m.).
Stone was a regular in Wellington’s first team last season before leaving in the summer to join Toolstation League rivals Buckland Athletic.
“Obviously it did not work out for Tom at Buckland," said Wellington’s assistant player-manager Jack Porter this week. “But it is brilliant news for us”
“As we’re already out of the FA Cup, we’re looking for a good run in the Vase. We have done well in this competition in the past.”
Wellington have also called up goalkeeper Rhys Williams who played in goal in three pre-season friendlies for the club. He takes over from Shay Allen who has been suspended for one match following his sending off at Nailsea and Tickenham in the 4-0 defeat last week.
Allen badly bruised his kicking foot during the incident which led to his dismissal just before the interval. He would not have been fit for the Vase game anyway.
Wellington have yet to win a game this season but have remained competitive throughout. Their worst defeat was at Nailsea which was explainable after they lost Allen. It has left them struggling in 16th place in the table, although it is very early days and the team is becoming more settled.
Wellington will also be in action on Tuesday when they play at Ilfracombe in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League. The North Devon side are mid-table, having taken seven points from their opening four matches.
Wellington Reserves play their first game in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League when they visit Newton St Cyres tomorrow.
The Reserves, who just missed out on promotion last season, have enjoyed a good build-up to the new season with impressive displays in friendlies under new player-manager and defender Mark Owen.
Wellington A’s opening game in the first division of the West Country Drainage Services Taunton Saturday League is away to Nether Stowey tomorrow week. Warren Toth continues as player-manager of the A team.
