WIVELISCOMBE Tennis Club has recently celebrated a remarkable milestone — its 100th anniversary — with a special celebration bringing together past and present members to honour a century of tennis in the community.
Tennis club members stepped onto the court in period dress and playing with traditional wooden racquets, recreating the charm and character of tennis from years gone by.
The event also looked towards the future of the sport, with a showcase of wheelchair tennis highlighting the club and coaches commitment to making tennis accessible and welcoming for everyone.
Members had the opportunity to try wheelchair tennis for themselves and experience the skills, challenges and enjoyment of playing from a wheelchair. The wheelchair tennis sessions are coached by the brilliant Ivor and Andy, whose enthusiasm and expertise are helping to grow participation and encourage more people to get involved.
After 100 years, Wiveliscombe Tennis Club continues to be at the heart of the local community and beyond, offering a friendly environment for players of all ages and abilities. The Wiveliscombe club celebrated its 100th anniversary just before Wimbledon got underway - with live coverage on TV of the event throughout the fortnight of the tournament, regarded by many as one of the best sporting events in the world.
Sadly, there are few British stars in the event despite the millions of pounds poured into the sport by the LTA.
And it was also a blow when British No1 Emma Raducani was forced to withdraw on the eve of the tournament with a stress fracture.
The former US Open champion had been managing an issue in her lower leg for several weeks.
