MILVERTON Red Dragon Karate is proud to report that one of their students, George Rylatt, has passed his 1st Dan black belt at a regional course held in Bath.
Wellington resident George, 12, has been training under Milverton’s club instructor, Sensei Peter Milne, over the past four years. To pass his grading he had to be assessed by Sensei Andy Sherry, 9th Dan and Chief Instructor of the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), the largest single style martial arts association in the UK.
George worked particularly hard in training in the weeks leading up to the big day, and delivered a stand-out performance in successfully completing all three sections of his grading. This comprised of Kihon (kicking, blocking and striking combinations), Kata (a complex pattern of movements that requires excellent form), and Kumite (sparring against an opponent).
The KUGB has over 7,000 members across the country, and the standard required to gain a 1st Dan black belt is very high. Milverton’s instructor Peter said of George: “I was extremely impressed with the spirit shown by this young man. He has always excelled in his kumite, and has medalled at several local and regional competitions over the past couple of years.
What delighted me was seeing his determination to improve all other aspects of his karate, not just rely on what he is naturally good at. To see him pass with such a flourish, and at his first attempt too, is extremely satisfying”
