WELLINGTON and Wiveliscombe clash in their big rugby derby at the Athletic Ground on Boxing Day (2p.m.).
Wellington have held the upper hand in recent years although the game ended in a 14-14 draw at Wiveliscombe when the sides last met three years ago.
Since then the last two scheduled matches between the sides have been cancelled due to Covid.
Wellington coach Allyn Chetland said: “Obviously we’re looking to field a strong side but we won’t know exactly what the squad will be until later in the week.
“We’re all looking forward to it. These matches are always big occasions and of course the clubhouse will be packed all day.
“We haven’t played for three weeks whereas Wiveliscombe have played twice.
“I don’t know whether this will be a good thing for us or not. It’s swings and roundabouts. Obviously some players will have got over knocks and bruises but you lose continuity when you stop playing.
“It’s the only rugby match around in the area, so we are expecting a big crowd provided the weather is not bad. “
Wellington will start the game as slight favourites by virtue of the fact they play in a higher division than Wivey and have home advantage. Wellington are lying sixth in Regional Two South West while Wiveliscombe are also sixth in Counties One Western West.
The day kicks off with a match between the clubs’ 2nd XVs - also at the Athletic Ground - with an 11a.m. start. Wellington will also be favourites in this match because they have already beaten their rivals twice in Counties Three Somerset South this season, the latest being a 32-22 win on the same ground only a fortnight ago. Previous to this they won 38-0 at Wiveliscombe.
After this there is no rugby for either club until Saturday, January 7 when Wellington are away to Crediton while Wiveliscombe are home to 100 per cent leaders and title favourites Cullompton.
Wellington 2nd XV are without a game while Wiveliscombe play away to their Chard counterparts.
