WELLINGTON’S hopes of winning their first rugby match of the season in Regional Two South West were cruelly dashed by Penzance & Newlyn who beat them 52-0 at the Athletic Ground.
The Cornish side, who had lost their opening two league games, never looked back after kicking a penalty after ten minutes and went on to lead 20pts-0 at half time with three tries, one of which was converted.
In a match dominated by a gale-force wind, Penzance quickly added to their lead with a penalty before going on to gain a decisive victory with four more tries, three of which were converted, and another penalty.
Meanwhile, Wellington’s Past Players held their annual AGM and lunch prior to the game. Eighty sat down and John Lane and Andy Chalker were elected as president and secretary.
Prior to the lunch, a minute’s silence was held to honour all those who had passed away in the last year.
