WIMBLEBALL Rowing Club’s annual regatta took place last Saturday - and the club achieved some notable victories.
In almost perfect conditions competitors from across the South West of England descended on Wimbleball Lake to race over a straight, 1000m, six-lane course.
Wimbleball, for the first time in many years, was able to put out a strong squad with rowers aged from 12 to over 60+ racing in singles, doubles, pairs, quads, fours and eights. The club competed in 19 events and came away with 10 wins putting them third in the overall standing for the day. A huge achievement for a small club.
Wins came in the Men’s Masters coxed four, Men’s Senior C single and Mens Novice single (both Ollie), Women’s Masters coxed four, Men’s Senior A single, Mixed Masters double, Men’s Masters A coxed four, Women’s eight and Men’s eight.
The competitors and supporters were supplied throughout the day with a superb range of homemade cake, drinks and locally sourced burgers and bacon baps. It was a wonderful day’s racing and the funds raised will go towards improving the clubs equipment. Their aim is to buy a women’s coxless four/coxed four.
The previous weekend rowers from the club competed at Totnes regatta where Tom won the Men’s Senior A singles. Others headed further afield to Nottingham to compete in the British Masters Championships where there were gold medals for Becky B and Mike in the non-championship double, Sarah and Adrian in the Mixed Masters C double and Adrian and Stewart in the Open E pair.
For a little club, in the middle of Exmoor, they are certainly punching above their weight.
If you have ever fancied having a go at rowing contact the club through the details shown on the club’s website or Facebook page. Hopefully there will be Learn to Row courses starting soon.
