OUTDOOR sport suffered a knock-out blow at the weekend with rugby and soccer being kicked into touch by the bad weather.
Wellington lst XV were looking to consolidate their position at the top of the Devon and Cornwall League in their home game against Torrington on Saturday. But Thursday’s heavy snow and icy conditions meant there was no way it could be played.
Wellington Under 18s were due to play Wellington School in their annual match for the Sam Sherwin Memorial Shield on the same pitch afterwards but this, too, had to be postponed.
The football match at the Playing Field between Wellington and Melksham Town in the Premier Division of the Toolstation League also had to be called off because it was snow-bound - the second game frozen off for Wellington in four days.
Wellington are due to play top of the table Street in a league game tonight (Wednesday), weather permitting.
Postponements for clubs means loss of revenue because they often have to be rearranged in midweek which attract smaller crowds.
And a pile-up of fixtures poses an even bigger headache as the season draws to a close.
Up until Christmas the weather had been kind to sport but rain, frost and snow has proved a nightmare in the past couple of months.
