A MUCH-loved local Scout group is at risk of closing its youngest section this summer unless new volunteers come forward.

1st Wellington Beavers, which provides activities for children aged six to eight years of age, has warned that its Beaver colony may have to shut in July due to a shortage of adult leaders.

The closure would mean local young people missing out on vital opportunities to build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and experience outdoor adventure in a safe and supportive environment.

Nadia Atherton, district lead volunteer for Blackdown Scouts, part of the Somerset County Scouts said: “Beavers is often where a young person’s journey in Scouting begins.

“Without volunteers, that journey simply can’t start. We are urgently appealing to our community to step forward - even a small amount of time can make a huge difference.”

The group is seeking volunteers for a range of flexible roles, including leaders, occasional helpers, and behind-the-scenes support. The other sections with the group also need more support. No prior experience is required, and full training and support are provided for any volunteers who come forward.

“Scouting continues to play a vital role in communities across Somerset, helping young people gain skills for life, make friends, and feel a sense of belonging,” Nadia Atherton added. “Without new volunteers, however, the future of 1st Wellington Beavers remains uncertain.”

The call for volunteers comes at a time when other scouting groups across the area have put out an appeal for more volunteers to safeguard their groups.

Wellington Girl Guiding groups were also searching for volunteers to come forward in January to help support the Wellington Brownies and Wellington Guides groups, as was the Wiveliscombe Scouting pack.
