Mobility scooter users have been advised by Wellington police to ensure they ride about on them responsibly and safely.

Members of Wellington Town Council raised concerns at their latest meeting about mobility scooters when Sgt Dan Bishop, of the local police, was giving his monthly report.

Cllr John Thorne said he had seen some mobility scooters being ridden in a ‘dangerous’ fashion.

“They can be used on the road but it’s not ideal,” said Sgt Bishop. He said officers would stop and speak to any mobility scooter user if they felt they were riding it irresponsibly.

Sgt Bishop added that drink-drive rules applied to mobility scooter users.
