POLICE are investigating an alleged Wellington residential break-in after an intruder ‘threatened homeowners with a knife’.

The thief, who had attempted to steal tools and garden equipment, escaped through neighbouring gardens before officers had arrived.

Police confirmed that on Saturday, June 28, an individual broke into the garage of a house in the Oakfield Park/Wellesley Park area at around 5am, waking the property residents.

The suspect had reportedly taken tools and other items, which were found abandoned nearby, and had thrown paint over the house and a car.

They had also attempted to steal a barbecue when a member of the household challenged the intruder who responded by shouting threats and displaying a knife, according to the police.

The offender is described as being between 5ft 10ins and 6ft tall and slim, wearing a balaclava, a black hoody and grey joggers.
