ABOUT 20 enthusiastic Wellington people joined Beating the Bounds – the following and marking of the parish boundary in a tradition dating back centuries.
Wellington Mayor Bob Bowrah gave us the off, then Deputy Mayor Gary James led, ensuring each took a turn ringing the bell at the site of boundary stones.
From the Skylark, much of the route followed the old canal bed from Nynehead to Holywell Lake, taking in beautiful scenery along the River Tone.
Cllr Dave Mitton highlighted numerous points of historical interest along the way, including the unconsecrated burial place of the last man hanged in Wellington.
The all-important tea and cakes stop at 17th Century Prowses Mill was generously provided by the Brunsch family while we rested feet and enjoyed the view of the Blackdowns.
Returning along the A38 boundary, kindly marshalled by Wellington Walking Group, it was a day for enjoyable company in gorgeous weather while appreciating the beautiful setting of our town.
