BUSINESSES in Taunton Deane say it is very difficult to plan beyond the short-term because of the impact of Brexit.
They told consultants carrying out research for the borough council that it was difficult to forecast the impact of leaving the EU on their businesses as uncertainty remained over key aspects of Brexit policy.
The research drew on interviews with 25 larger businesses and business representative bodies, and explored the support businesses will need from local and national Government in preparing for Brexit.
The research suggests that the key risks for Taunton Deane are:
Reduction in the ability to recruit staff/labour from EU countries – particularly of relevance to tourism, construction, manufacturing and food processing.
Reduction in the ability to trade freely with the EU – businesses which exported to the EU were concerned about the imposition of tariffs and other barriers to trade with the EU.
Wider recession/inflation – a number of businesses highlighted concerns about inflationary pressures arising from the higher costs of imports.
Cllr Mark Edwards, executive councillor for Business Development, said: “This research has highlighted a number of important issues we need to consider if we are to give local businesses the support needed as Brexit moves forward.
“It is of considerable value to the council and the economic development team who work closely with the business community here in Taunton Deane.”
The study was commissioned by Taunton Deane and West Somerset councils, and was produced by Emma Buckman Associates, based in Devon.
