THE number of taxis operating in Taunton Deane could be capped as existing cabbies find it hard to make ends meet.

The borough council says about 198 drivers are working in the area and members of the trade have lobbied the council to restrict numbers.

Now the council, which can license as many taxis as it wants, is asking the public to have its say. The council, following government guidance, has already commissioned a survey which showed more than enough vehicles are operating to meet demand in the area.

The public consultation ends on August 14 – to take part in the survey online visit https://www.survey
