YEAR 3 and 4 children at Beech Grove Primary School in Wellington were enthralled by a visit from The Barn Owl Trust.

After finding out about the challenges faced by barn owls: decreasing food supply, lack of suitable habitats and increasing numbers of roads, the pupils examined a barn owl egg, a barn owl pellet and the ankle of a dead bird.

The barn owl ankle and foot, taken from a bird killed on a road, showed a tag with instructions about what to do if found. The trust also explained what it does to help this endangered species. It talks to farmers in order to preserve wild grasslands and builds large boxes with nesting material that are installed in farm buildings.

Baley, the male barn owl who visited the children, displayed how quietly and gracefully the birds fly by swooping around Jenner classroom!
