LOCAL MP Gideon Amos has denied misleading voters by claiming he had raised funds for the planned new Wellington Railway Station.
The claim was made in a Liberal Democrat leaflet which Royal Mail recently delivered to homes in the town.
The leaflet included a photograph of Mr Amos turning the first sod for the access road to the station site.
Its caption read: “Gideon broke ground for the access road for Wellington’s long-awaited new railway station after he secured funding last year.”
But, the access road is being funded by housing developer Bloor Homes as part of its planning permission to build 178 homes.
And, the only station funding allocated to date has been £6 million spent under the previous Government on plans for twin halts in Wellington and Cullompton, and an unknown amount from the current Government for Network Rail design work.
The cost of Wellington’s station was to have come from the former Government’s £500 million ‘Restoring Your Railway’ fund.
But this was scrapped after Labour’s 2024 General Election victory, with the station later promised funding in a spending review.
Mr Amos told the Wellington Weekly he had campaigned against Labour’s cut and challenged the Chancellor during her first Budget debate.
He then worked closely with MPs to secure debates and meetings with Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, and other Ministers, and took Wellington residents to Westminster to directly lobby Lord Hendy.
Mr Amos said: “I was delighted when I was told on the phone by Treasury officials on the day of the Chancellor’s Spending Review in June, 2025, that funding was being awarded and the project was restarting.
“Funds have subsequently been passed to Network Rail who are working on final designs and implementation plans.”
Mr Amos said he expected an announcement soon on timescales for building and completing the station.
