THE upcoming town film festival is set to screen a council-led documentary on their project to plant 3,000 trees in Wellington.

The new film ‘Our Town Planted Trees’ will show at the Arts Centre on Saturday, October 4, at 1.30pm alongside the documentary inspired by Isabella Tree’s book with the same name, ‘Wilding’.

In December 2024, The Woodland Trust and Wellington Town Council entered into an ambitious agreement to plant more than 3,000 trees and shrubs in a 64-acre area of land known as The Green Corridor as part of the Trust’s Woodland Creation Scheme.

Over the course of eight planting days ending in March, the people of Wellington and Rockwell Green successfully planted more than 3,300 trees, surpassing the original goal.

The two groups have now made a short film documenting the planting process and the groups’ ultimate success.

A spokesperson for the festival has described ‘Our Town Planted Trees’ as a film that “emphasises the importance of trees and our environment to us and shows the resilience of the Wellington community in the face of climate change.”

Rosie Walker, South West regional external affairs officer for The Woodland Trust said: “Wellington truly is a special place for nature with so much going on across the green corridor and other sites to make our town even better for nature and people.

“Last winter Wellington Town Council worked together with the Woodland Trust, to plant just under 2HA’s of Woodland in sensitively chosen and designed areas across the green corridor.

“The people of Wellington grabbed their spades to take part in creating this new habitat. They joined me along with local companies and organisations to plant the trees in all weathers. What a magnificent effort towards nature recovery!”

The Wellington Film Festival is taking place from October 3 until 5.
