VISITORS from the Holocaust Education Trust have been working with students in Years 9-13 at Wellington School.
Holocaust educator Alex Fender discussed the history of the Holocaust during a morning session and challenged Year 9 students to think about its moral and ethical implications.
Holocaust survivor Rudi Oppenheimer gave a talk to an audience of students from Years 9-13 in the afternoon. Rudi told his story of life in Westerbork Transit Camp in Holland, as well as his experiences in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he was incarcerated with the rest of his family.
Many students in the audience posed well thought-out questions, which Rudi answered succinctly and in many cases with humour.
Head of History John Caulfield said: “A number of students stayed behind after the talk to chat to Rudi, and were in awe of Rudi’s openness and equanimity when discussing such a traumatic part of his life. We are immensely grateful to him for coming to share his experiences with us.”
