A CELEBRATION will be held on Wednesday (January 7) of the various walking opportunities available in and around Wiveliscombe.

The Wivey Walkers group, which is preparing to mark its 25th anniversary, is holding an event from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm in Wiveliscombe Rugby Club for anybody interested in walking.

The group offers walking opportunities to suit all abilities.

One group of about 30 regular walkers meets twice a month to walk between five and nine miles around Wiveliscombe and the surrounding area.

It also organises ‘The Gentle Walkers’ group, which was formed for those who prefer a shorter walk of between two and four miles.

The ‘gentle’ group now has about 35 active walkers, again walking locally and further afield.

A third group, Wivey Amblers, was recently launched to provide ‘very gentle’, short walks to help build up strength, balance, and confidence.

After the walks, members recover with tea and cake.

The Amblers group is affiliated to Wivey Cares, a charity connecting those with a need with those who can help within the Wiveliscombe community.

They have plans to hold group mobility sessions such as Tai Chi or armchair pilates on wet winter days when walking is not possible.

Wivey Walkers also has a newly-formed group of footpath clearers who work hard to keep open the local network of paths.

Contacts for the different groups are [email protected] for the five to nine miles walkers, [email protected] for the gentle walkers, [email protected] for the Amblers, while anybody interested in helping to clear footpaths should email [email protected].
