CINEMA Obscura completes its current season of films at Wiveliscombe Primary School New Hall on Sunday with Difret  (15).

When 14-year-old Hirut is abducted as part of a traditional marriage ritual, she fights back, killing her  intended husband.

Local law demands a death sentence for Hirut but Meaza, a tough and passionate lawyer from a women’s legal aid practice, steps in to fight for her. 

The two women must make their case for self-defence against one of Ethiopia’s oldest and most deeply-rooted traditions.

The film,  directed by Zereseney Berhane Mehari, is in Amharic with English subtitles. Doors open at 7pm and the films starts at 7.30pm. Film-goers are invite to go early and enjoy a hot drink and cake, and meet their friends before the film starts.
