CADES Farm resident Jo-anne Casey received enthusiastic personal support from Mayor of Wellington Cllr Bob Bowrah and Wellington in Bloom chairman Isabel Ward when she asked for volunteers to help with spring cleaning the stretch of road between the Chelston and Cades Farm roundabouts.
Armed with picking sticks and plastic bags, a troop of six volunteers gave up two hours of their Saturday morning to remove rubbish from the footpaths and verges of the B3187 on the approach road to Wellington, improving the environment for walkers, runners and drivers alike.
Glass and plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and drinks cans were later separated from the general waste and recycled at Wellington Waste Re-cycling Centre. A number of road warning signs, abandoned or ‘lost’ by their owners, were unearthed and left at the roadside for collection by the authorities.
The effort was just a small part of the Great British Spring Clean – 2,500 similar events were held around the country between Friday and Sunday.
