TIVERTON Museum has opened a new summer exhibition, Munitions and Matrons; Tiverton’s role during World War One.

It showcases a project which has examined the contribution the Heathcoat Factory made to the war effort during the First World War.

The factory was heavily involved in the war effort from 1915, producing shell cases and net for very early respirators after the first gas attacks on the Western Front.

Museum staff and volunteers have undertaken hours of research using photographs, newspapers and documents.

And museum staff have talked to local people who had family members who worked in the factory during the war which has helped to build up a better picture of individuals behind the story.
