A STRATEGY to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040 is being supported by the NHS in the Westcountry by working to increase uptake in the HPV vaccine and screening.

About 2,700 people are diagnosed each year with cervical cancer in England, with proportionally more in the Westcountry compared to the national rate.

Both the HPV vaccination and cervical screening are vital tools to lowering the number by preventing it occurring.

Public health consultant Dr Matthew Dominey said: “We believe eliminating cervical cancer by 2040 is achievable, and we are working hard to ensure the public are aware of the tools available to them.

“We are also working to identify barriers to accessing services and are collaborating with experts to strengthen the pathways around cervical cancer.”
