PEOPLE POWER has seen off controversial proposals to redevelop the site of the landmark Sportsman pub in Waterloo Road, Wellington, which have been thrown out by Taunton Deane planners.

Local residents and councillors united to persuade the Deane's planning committee to reject plans to demolish the existing buildings and replace them with seven four bedroom houses after neighbours claimed the plans failed to provide enough on-site parking.

They said the lack of parking provision would result in parking chaos in the vicinity of the site – and members of the committee agreed.
