A GARAGE on the A38 to Wellington could become a cafe with al fresco dining and a takeaway service if newly submitted plans are given the thumbs up.

The site lies opposite the Blackbird Inn bed and breakfast on Taunton Road and is currently being used for storage space by the business owners.

The owners are now hoping they will be given permission to make the garage and its adjoining car park a spot to charge their electric cars and grab a bite to eat.

The proposals would see the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles, outside seating and portable toilets, with car parking spaces for 17 cars, including two spaces reserved for disabled people.

The bid comes after the Blackbird Inn owners Peter Welling and Yvonne Mulvihill withdrew a planning proposal to construct eight dwellings on the car park in 2020 - telling planners that the pub - as it then was - had "no trade."

The owners later won permission to convert the Blackbird Inn from a pub to a bed and breakfast in late 2021, which have they been operating since.
