A PUBLIC garden in the centre of Wellington was under a police cordon on Friday morning after an undisclosed incident took place.

Access to Monmouth Gardens, in North Street, was prevented by a scene guard while a forensics officer took photographs of the area inside the cordon.

Monmouth Gardens is a small but popular location for people to sit and relax, with hedging screening them from the passing traffic in North Street.

It is overlooked by the Wetherspoons Iron Duke public house on the opposite side of the road.

The garden has three public seats, one of which is a ‘chatty bench’ intended to encourage people to talk to each other about mental health issues.

Avon and Somerset Police have been contacted for comment about the incident.
