POLICE are bracing themselves once again to see the rundown Tonedale Mill site in Wellington become a “playground” now that summer is on its way.

Officers are often called to the Mill site to deal with young people who have got into the buildings which have fallen into disrepair and become dangerous.

Sgt Jon O’Connor, speaking at Wellington Town Council’s annual meeting on May 1, said: “Tonedale Mill becomes a bit of a playground once again once the weather gets warmer.

“I would urge the site owners and the authorities to try and make sure that the site is secure.”

Sgt O’Connor added: “It really is a health and safety nightmare and I don’t really want my officers in there charging about after people.”

Police have told councillors in the past that the derelict mill buildings are an “attractive playground” for some local youths who manage to get inside.
