The first Jumble Trail event in Wellington has received a mixed bag of comments from people – with many saying they did not even know it was happening.

The Trail was held on May 24 and saw 33 registered addresses in Wellington taking part with an assortment of stalls for people to visit.

The event was organised by Wellington Town Council, and when it asked for feedback afterwards, a total of 45 comments were received.

Many commented saying they were unaware the event was happening, while others said it should not have been held on a Bank Holiday Weekend as people were away or had other plans.

The council had put a small survey on social media Facebook for stallholders and people to comment.

One person wrote: “It was an excellent idea. I think it should have more advance publicity earlier in the year so people know it is happening.

“Quite a few people who came to us didn’t know about the trail in advance and just happened to come across the stalls.”

Another person said: “We found that many actual Wellington residents had no idea it was on and many found us by accident. More local advertising and getting more signs up in the streets would’ve improved it.”

While another wrote: “It was so enjoyable – we really enjoyed the browsing, chatting to the sellers and finding bargains. Hopefully next year there will be even more sellers.”

The town council’s events working group spokesman said: “People enjoyed the event, but felt there was not enough event advertising and promotion. If the event is done again, maybe a leaflet drop could be considered?”

The event and feedback was discussed by members of the town council’s economic development committee on Wednesday (June 10).

Committee chairman, Cllr Keith Wheatley, said: “There was a lot of feedback and I was impressed by the comments received.

“The concept was quite popular I think, but we have got to keep telling people about events so that they know.

“People often respond to what their friends and neighbours are going to do – so we need to look at this in the future.”

Cllr Wheatley said: “I don’t think it was an overwhelming success, but definitely an idea we can build on.”

The Mayor, Cllr Mark Lithgow, said: “I was pleased to see that people were complimentary on the whole, although there were some criticisms about a lack of communication and the event being held over a Bank Holiday.”

Cllr Chris Penk said: “It doesn’t matter how much you put out on social media or other places with advertising about an event – there’s always going to be someone who doesn’t see it. But I thought the feedback was brilliant.”

Cllr John Thorne quipped: “More people commented about the jumble trail in the feedback than those who actually took part in the event! And people say they didn’t see anything about the event being put on, but they all saw it when we asked for feedback!”
