REPAIR work is to be carried out at the historic fountain in the award-winning Wellington Park.

Members of Wellington Town Council’s environment committee heard on Wednesday (September 15) that stone edging around the fountain had been damaged with one section now missing.

“As the fountain is an original feature within the Grade II listed park, it is important that the repair is undertaken sympathetically and in keeping with the historic character of the site,” said the council’s open spaces manager Darren Hill.

“We have obtained a quotation from a suitably experienced stonemason who has previously undertaken work on the Wellington Monument.

“Their experience with historic stonework makes them well placed to carry out the repair to an appropriate standard and using sympathetic materials and techniques.”

Mr Hill added; “The proposed works will involve repairing and reinstating the damaged/missing sections of the stone edging, restoring the fountain while retaining its historic character and appearance.”

Councillors agreed to spend nearly £1,600 on buying the stone, cutting and shaping the stones and installing them.

They were warned that not repairing the stone edging around the fountain could present health and safety, liability and financial risks. Loose, broken or uneven stone may create a trip or fall hazard for members of the public.

A report added: “Further deterioration could also cause additional damage to the fountain or surrounding surface, increasing the eventual cost of repair.

“If the council is aware of the defect and fails to take reasonable steps to address it, there may also be an increased risk of liability if someone is injured, as well as reputational damage arising from a failure to maintain a public asset safely.”

The town council took on the responsibility for Wellington Park and its upkeep and maintenance from cash-strapped Somerset Council two years ago.
