CAMPAIGNERS against proposed housing on farmland outside Wellington are calling on supporters to ‘bombard’ Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer with protest emails.
Protect Wellington is holding its second mass rally on Saturday (April 18) to show the strength of local opposition to plans by Pegasus Group to build 250 houses in fields around Middle Green Farm, to the south of the A38 relief road.
Starting at 11 am on land opposite Swains Lane, members will be leading nature walks on public footpaths across the housing application site’s fields.
A spokesperson said it would be an opportunity for people to learn about the value of the land and to take photographs to accompany any emails they send to Sir Keir.
They said: “The purpose is simple, to demonstrate, collectively, that people everywhere care deeply about the nature parks and green spaces and want to see them protected and restored.
“We aim to show decision-makers of all parties that nature matters to the electorate.”
The event, which is expected to last for an hour, is part of a national day of action organised by the volunteer-run group Community Planning Alliance.
The spokesperson said: “The day is needed partly because of what Keir Starmer has said over the past two years - ‘We are not going to plough through farmland’ and ‘We are not gonna build all over the countryside. That is a nonsense, of course. Nobody wants to do that’.”
The Labour Government has pledged to build 1.5 million new homes by 2029 to ease the country’s housing crisis.
Last month, about 300 people attended a Protect Wellington rally on farmland next to the proposed housing site and then marched into the town centre, while 200 letters of objection have been sent to Somerset Council, which is currently preparing to determine the Pegasus application.
