THE first pupils for an £11.3 million new school in Taunton will spend year one attending classes in Wellington.

Pupils due to start at the new primary school on the Orchard Grove development in Comeytrowe will instead be bussed to Wellington’s Isambard Kingdom Brunel School (IKB).

The 420-place Orchard Grove school will not be ready to open until September, 2024, a year after pupils should have joined it.

A county council spokesman said home to school transport would be provided for the Taunton youngsters and they would wear their new school uniforms, have the same classes, subjects, and teachers.

The Castle Partnership Trust has been approved as the academy sponsor to run the new school and applications for a places in reception this September have already been received.

The partnership already runs IKB, Wellesley Park, and Court Fields schools in Wellington.

IKB only opened two years ago and therefore is not yet full, allowing room to accommodate the Taunton youngsters.
